The study examined 1,604 people from the south-west London in England, Limburg in Belgium and Abruzzo in Italy.

The participants underwent a general medical examination and a blood sample. They also answered a detailed questionnaire on their lifestyle including dietary habits and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The results are striking: a moderate alcohol consumption increases because the amount of omega-3 in blood and red blood cells.
The importance of omega -3 is universally recognized, the substances are contained in some types of fish, protective against cardiovascular disease and sudden death.
The study finds that people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol, a glass of wine a day for women and two men (as suggested by the guidelines) have a higher concentration of omega-3 in plasma and red blood cells, regardless of the amount of fish consumed.
The mechanism is not yet fully known but are believed to be the polyphenols and alcohol in itself to allow the increase of omega-3.
Polyphenols belong to the class of antioxidants contained in a wide variety of foods and beverages, including wine.
These natural compounds, believed to be capable of reducing oxidative stress caused by free radicals, were not so far been associated with levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood.

This article reports the results of studies carried out by a group of American scholars, published in the journal Science.

This study shows that extra virgin olive oil to fulfill a natural analgesic effect due to the presence of a substance, dubbed "oleocanthal."

Olive oil, the article mentions, has an anti-inflammatory and is similar to ibuprofen, and more generally to anti-inflammatory drugs commonly used in medicine for their powerful analgesic effect.

Even if the two molecules are structurally dissimilar, both substances produce irritation of the throat, interdict and the action of cyclo-oxygenase (COX) *. The enzyme cyclooxygenase catalyzes one of the first stages of the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, potent mediators of inflammatory remarried. A dose of 50 grams of olive oil would appear to provide 10% of the analgesic effect produced by a dose of ibuprofen. It is therefore actually quite modest when compared with those of a single dose of anti-inflammatory.

However, the authors conclude the article claiming that the recent findings raise the possibility that many of the positive properties of olive oil in combating certain types of illness can be traced to the ability to fight dell'oleocantale the activity of cyclooxygenase.
